Phytoplasmas are microscopic, obligate intracellular parasites that infect both plant phloem tissue and the insect vectors responsible for their transmission between plants. They were first discovered in 1967 by Japanese scientists and are often referred to as mycoplasma-like organisms. Notably, phytoplasmas cannot be cultured in a cell-free medium, making their study and control challenging. These pathogens impact economically important plants such as coconut, sugarcane, sandalwood, and cannabis, as well as horticultural crops like sweet cherries, peaches, and nectarines. They cause a wide range of symptoms, from mild yellowing and stunted growth to reduced fruit quality and even plant death. Phytoplasmas are most common in tropical and subtropical regions and are transmitted from plant to plant by sap-sucking insects like leafhoppers, where they both survive and replicate.
