Phytophthora fragariae is a soil-borne oomycete and one of the most destructive pathogens affecting strawberry cultivation (Fragaria x ananassa). Classified as a quarantine-relevant pathogen in many regions, it is the causal agent of red stele (red core) root rot. The pathogen thrives in cool and water-saturated soil conditions, where its motile zoospores invade the root tips, eventually colonizing the vascular tissues.
