Apple Rubbery Wood Virus 2 (ARWV-2) is a negative-sense single-stranded RNA virus related to apple rubbery wood disease. This virus makes disease on apple and pear plants. Infected trees’ branches are more flexible and weaker than a normal trees. The wood is like rubbery, however; there are an unusually high percentage of broken branches. Tree growth is stunted, and new stems and limbs are unable to grow, are distorted, or are rosetted. These are common symptoms of apple rubbery wood disease. There is no record of apple rubbery wood disease transmission by insects or other natural vectors; vegetative propagation practices are the only known means of virus transmission.
