Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV000) is a positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus in the genus Tobamovirus that primarily infects plants in the Solanaceae family, including tobacco. It is highly thermostable, surviving at temperatures up to 50°C for 30 minutes. TMV spreads through direct contact between plants, human handling, or via plasmodesmata and phloem within the plant, but not through insect vectors. Symptoms include light green mottling between leaf veins, followed by a mosaic pattern of light and dark green areas, rugosity (wrinkling), and “mosaic burn” in hot, dry conditions. While TMV does not kill plants, early infections can stunt growth, particularly affecting younger leaves. The virus is easily transmitted, making it a significant concern for plant health.
