Xanthomonas citri pv. citri (XANTCI) is a highly contagious bacterial pathogen and the causal agent of Citrus Canker, one of the most economically devastating diseases affecting citrus production globally. This Gram-negative bacterium targets leaves, stems, and fruits, causing raised, corky, and necrotic lesions that significantly reduce fruit quality and marketability. XANTCI is a major barrier to the international trade of citrus products, as even minor infestations can lead to total crop rejection and mandatory eradication programs.  The pathogen thrives in warm, humid conditions and is primarily disseminated by wind-blown rain, overhead irrigation, and contaminated agricultural tools. A critical factor in the severity of outbreaks is the wounding caused by the citrus leafminer (Phyllocnistis citrella), which facilitates the entry of the bacteria into the host tissues. Once established, the bacteria multiply rapidly within the intercellular spaces, leading to premature leaf and fruit drop. Given its high rate of transmission and the lack of an effective systemic cure, rapid molecular screening is the cornerstone of phytosanitary management and the protection of commercial citrus groves.
