Cryphonectria parasitica is a highly destructive pathogen responsible for Chestnut Blight, a disease that has devastated forest ecosystems and chestnut production worldwide. This fungus enters through wounds or pruning sites, rapidly colonizing the cambium and phloem. Infection forms sunken, reddish-orange necrotic cankers that girdle stems, obstructing water and nutrient transport. This leads to rapid wilting and “flagging”—the sudden dieback of individual branches above the infection site. 

The epidemiology of C. parasitica is driven by a dual spore system (wind-dispersed ascospores and rain-splashed conidia), facilitating both long-distance and localized spread. A major challenge is that while the pathogen kills the tree’s above-ground portions, the roots often survive, leading to cycles of regrowth and reinfection. Since visible cankers indicate advanced infection, early molecular detection is essential. Identifying the pathogen’s DNA enables timely quarantine and supports hypovirulence-based biocontrol, preventing the irreversible collapse of high-value plantations.
