Cytospora canker, caused by species within the genus Cytospora, is a major threat to orchard longevity and forest health worldwide. This opportunistic pathogen targets woody hosts—including stone and pome fruits—invading through pruning wounds, frost cracks, or stress-related injuries. The infection forms sunken, necrotic cankers that can girdle branches, causing vascular obstruction and rapid canopy dieback. A diagnostic hallmark is the emergence of black pycnidia, which exude orange-to-reddish spore masses, known as cirrhi, under humid conditions.
The epidemiology of Cytospora sp. is complex due to a latent endophytic phase, where the pathogen persists within healthy tissues before transitioning to a virulent stage under stress. Since visual symptoms often appear only after vascular damage has occurred, early molecular detection is a valuable tool. Identifying the pathogen’s DNA enables detection of latent infections before cankers develop, allowing for targeted pruning and timely management interventions, helping to prevent tree mortality.
