Diaporthe cinerascens is a highly destructive pathogen responsible for Fig Canker, representing a major threat to commercial fig production. 

The fungus primarily invades through pruning wounds or environmental cracks, rapidly colonizing bark and woody tissues. 

Infection is characterized by sunken, zonate cankers that lead to vascular necrosis and limb dieback. As these cankers expand and girdle branches, water and photoassimilate transport are disrupted, resulting in leaf chlorosis, defoliation, 

and ultimately tree mortality.  The epidemiology of D. cinerascens is driven by rain-splashed conidia and contaminated tools or equipment. A significant challenge is the pathogen’s ability to persist as a latent endophyte within asymptomatic tissues, becoming aggressive under host stress conditions. Because visible cankers typically indicate advanced 

infection, early molecular detection is a critical biosecurity measure. Identifying the pathogen’s DNA in nursery stock or early-stage wounds enables timely quarantine and targeted management, preventing severe yield losses and orchard decline in high-value fig plantations.
