Ink disease, primarily caused by the oomycete pathogen Phytophthora cambivora, is a severe and economically destructive diseaseto chestnut and walnut orchards worldwide. This soil-borne pathogen specifically targets cambium and phloem tissues, causing extensive root and crown necrosis. A defining symptom is the exudation of a black, ink-like liquid from the trunk base, caused by the oxidation of host tannins during tissue decay. As the pathogen girdles the crown, it disrupts nutrient transport, leading to microphylla (small leaves), chlorosis, and rapid canopy dieback.
