Taphrina deformans is a highly specialized ascomycete pathogen responsible for Peach Leaf Curl, a widespread disease affecting peach and nectarine orchards. The fungus is distinguished by its dimorphic life cycle, overwintering as yeast-like cells on bud scales before transitioning to a parasitic form during bud break. Infection causes severe leaf distortion, thickening, and puckering, with tissues turning yellowish to reddish. These malformations result from the pathogen’s ability to disrupt host hormonal balance, leading to uncontrolled cell hypertrophy.
