Candidatus Phytoplasma solani is a significant phytoplasma responsible for the “Bois noir” disease in grapevines and various other plant species. This pathogen is primarily transmitted by polyphagous planthopper vectors, mainly Hyalesthes obsoletus, in a persistent manner. The pathogen cycle involves reservoir weeds such as bindweed and nettles, which serve as alternative hosts. In affected grapevines, characteristic symptoms include leaf discoloration (reddening in red varieties, yellowing in white varieties), downward rolling of leaves, poor lignification of canes, and shriveled berries. As no curative treatments exist, preventive measures through certified planting material and ongoing monitoring remain essential for disease containment.
