Aspergillus, a genus consisting of several hundred mould species found in various climates worldwide. Aspergillus is defined as a group of conidial fungi. With DNA evidence, all members of the genus Aspergillus are members of the phylum Ascomycota. A.flavus and A.parasiticus are members of the Trichocomaceae family. A.flavus is the major producer of carcinogenic aflatoxins in crops worldwide. It is also an opportunistic human and animal pathogen, causing aspergillosis in immunocompromised individuals. Often confused with the closely related species, A.flavus, A.parasiticus has defined morphological and molecular differences. A.parasiticus is one of three fungi able to produce the mycotoxin, aflatoxin, one of the most carcinogenic naturally occurring substances. A.parasiticus also exhibits physiological differences from A.flavus such as the inability to produce cyclopiazonic acid and the production of aflatoxin G.
