Southern blight, caused by the soil-borne basidiomycete fungus Athelia rolfsii (anamorph: Sclerotium rolfsii), is a destructive plant disease affecting a wide range of economically important crops, including vegetables, fruits, and ornamental plants. The pathogen is characterized by its ability to produce persistent sclerotia, which enable long-term survival in soil under unfavorable conditions. Under warm and humid environments, A. rolfsii rapidly colonizes host plants at the crown and soil line, leading to stem rot, wilting, and eventual plant death.
