Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. albedinis is a specialized soil-borne pathogen responsible for Bayoud disease, the most lethal threat to date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) cultivation. Having caused the loss of millions of trees across North Africa, the fungus invades the host’s vascular system, leading to progressive wilting and total collapse. As its resilient chlamydospores can persist in the soil for over a decade, early detection is paramount to prevent spread to disease-free regions.
The infection initiates in the roots and colonizes xylem vessels, obstructing water and nutrient transport. Symptoms manifest as characteristic unilateral whitening or yellowing of the fronds, progressing upwards until the crown dies. Disseminated primarily through infected offshoots, contaminated soil, or irrigation water, the disease has no effective chemical cure once symptomatic. Consequently, molecular screening of propagation materials is the cornerstone of phytosanitary management and germplasm protection.
