Pear rust, caused by the heteroecious basidiomycete fungus Gymnosporangium sabinae, is an economically important disease affecting pear trees (Pyrus spp.) across Europe, Asia, and North Africa. The pathogen requires two taxonomically unrelated hosts to complete its life cycle. It overwinters in Juniperus spp. and infects pear leaves in spring through wind-dispersed basidiospores, which are produced following teliospore germination within gelatinous telial structures. Infection initially results in characteristic bright orange to reddish lesions on pear leaves, followed by the development of spermagonia (pycnia) on the upper leaf surface and aecia on the lower surface. Severe infections may cause premature defoliation, reduced tree vigor, and significant yield losses.

The epidemiology and severity of G. sabinae are strongly influenced by the proximity of pear and juniper hosts and by favorable environmental conditions, particularly high humidity. Since the pathogen can persist year-round in the woody tissues of Juniperus hosts, infected junipers can serve as a persistent and continuous source of inoculum. Consequently, early and accurate molecular detection of G. sabinae can provide a valuable tool for disease monitoring and management, enabling timely intervention before the development of severe symptoms and extensive spore dispersal.
