Sooty mold, caused by the ascomycete fungus Leptoxyphium fumago, forms a black, soot-like layer on leaves, stems, and fruits of many economically important crops. L. fumago grows saprophytically on honeydew produced by aphids, whiteflies, and scale insects. The dense black mycelial mat reduces photosynthesis, causing stunted growth, premature leaf drop, and decreased crop quality. 

The epidemiology of Leptoxyphium fumago depends on honeydew-producing insects and humid conditions. The pathogen is primarily disseminated by wind and rain-splashed spores.
