Walnut anthracnose, caused by the ascomycete fungus Ophiognomonia leptostyla, is a serious disease affecting walnut trees (Juglans spp.) in most walnut-growing temperate regions worldwide. The pathogen primarily targets leaves but can also infect young shoots and green fruit husks, causing characteristic dark brown to black necrotic lesions. Under high humidity and frequent rainfall, the disease often results in premature defoliation, which severely reduces tree vigor and impacts nut quality indirectly by limiting photosynthesis, leading to poorly filled kernels that may appear darkened and shriveled.
