Beet curly top virus belongs to the same family as Tomato yellow leaf curl virus, which has the name of Geminiviridae. Viruses belongs to this family known with their single stranded DNA molecules. BCTV has been known to affect more than 300 plant species from 44 different families. Beans, celery, spinach, melons, peppers, squashes, cucumbers, and tomatoes are the species that BCTV can have an effect on. Infected plants starts to show symptoms within 5 days. Since this is a single stranded DNA virus, with this specially designed qPCR kit, it can be detected via Real-Time PCR instruments.
