Bursaphelenchus xylophilus is a nematode species that infects tree in Pinus genus and causes the death of trees. Although it is North America origin, it spreads Japan, Asia, China, Korea, Portugal and Europe. Bursaphelenchus xylophilus has typical nematode life cycle but it is shorter than other parasitic nematodes. In laboratory studies in which it is cultured on fungal media, its life cycle is completed in four days. In nature it reproduces most rapidly in the summer, producing large numbers of individuals that spread throughout the resin canal system of susceptible pines, into the trunk, the branches, and the roots. The mode of spread of this nematode is not explained clearly but it may be insect bites.
