The bacterial pathogen ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma mali’ is linked to apple proliferation disease, which affects apple trees (Malus × domestica). The other hosts of this pathogen are cherry, apricot and plum trees. Infected trees exhibit symptoms such as downward-rolled, brittle, and smaller leaves that turn red in autumn instead of the typical yellow. Flowers may develop extra petals and often fail to produce fruit, while any fruit that does form is smaller, poorly colored, and lacks flavor. Affected trees become less vigorous, though they rarely die, and may recover with proper fertilization. PHYPMA is transmitted by insect vector, graft or infected materials. There are 2 main insect vectors, Cacopsylla picta and C. Melanoneura. The phytoplasma can be passed down to subsequent generations of insects through their infected eggs.
