The bacterial pathogen ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma pyri’, known as pear decline pytoplasma, is widespread across Europe. The severity of the disease varies depending on factors such as the tree variety, rootstock, and age. The primary vector responsible for spreading the pathogen is the pear psyllid (Cacopsylla pyricola). Additionally, it is likely that other species, including C. pyri and C. pyrisuga, can also act as vectors for transmission. Pear decline symptoms are most visible in late summer, with premature red or yellow leaf coloration, curling, and early leaf drop. By spring, affected trees show weak growth and sparse, pale foliage, sometimes with necrotic tissue at the graft union. Similar symptoms can also result from waterlogging, root damage, or bacterial cankers.
