Diaporthe helianthi, a fungal pathogen also known as Phomopsis helianthi, is the causative agent behind Phomopsis stem canker in sunflowers. First observed in Europe during the late 1970s and later in the United States during the 1980s, this fungal organism wreaks havoc on sunflower crops. It inflicts sunflower stems with significant canker lesions, leading to stem weakening, lodging, and ultimately the death of the plants. Diaporthe helianthi possesses the ability to overwinter through resilient structures, making effective management a formidable challenge. In terms of habitat and proliferation, this fungus finds the relative humidity of 90% and temperatures ranging from 20-24°C particularly conducive for its growth and development. Although, efforts for control primarily through cultural practices and the development of resistant cultivars in certain European regions, the relentless nature of this fungal organism remains a common concern for sunflower cultivation worldwide.
