Orobanche spp., commonly known as broomrapes, are parasitic plants devoid of chlorophyll, exhibiting yellow to straw-colored stems and snapdragon-like flowers. Ranging from 10 to 60 centimeters in height, they remain hidden beneath the soil when not flowering. Operating as obligate parasites, they rely entirely on other plants for nutrients, germinating in response to specific compounds released by living plant roots. Once germinated, they extend root-like structures that attach to the roots of neighboring hosts, depriving them of essential water and nutrients. While some species are highly specialized, targeting specific plant species, others display a broader parasitic range. Notably, Orobanche ramosa, or branched broomrape, is a major agricultural threat, affecting crops like tomato, eggplant, potato, cabbage, and beans, potentially leading to catastrophic crop failure in heavily infested regions.
