Potato Virus M (PVM), classified in the Carlavirus genus of the Flexviridae family, possesses a positive-sense genomic RNA of around 8.5 kb, polyadenylated and single-stranded. This virus is widely common and economically significant for potato (Solanum tuberosum) globally. PVM infection can cause a yield reduction in potatoes ranging from 15% to 45%, with some regions experiencing up to 100% infection in certain potato cultivars. Aphids transmit the virus in a non-persistent manner, and it can also spread through mechanical inoculation using sap from young leaves. Symptoms of PVM infection in potato plants include mottling, mosaic patterns, leaf crinkling, rolling, and stunting of shoots. These symptoms often overlap with those caused by other common potato viruses such as Potato Virus S (PVS), Potato Virus X (PVX), and the common strain of Potato Virus Y (PVYO).
