Papaya Ringspot Virus (PRSV), aka Potyvirus papayanuli, is a pathogenic plant virus belonging to the genus Potyvirus. It has a single-stranded, positive-sense RNA genome. The virus primarily infects papaya and cucurbit crops such as squash, cucumber, and watermelon. Symptoms include severe mosaic patterns on leaves, water-soaked streaks on petioles, and distinctive ring-shaped spots on fruits, which often become distorted and unmarketable. PRSV is transmitted non-persistently by several aphid species (Myzus persicae, Aphis gossypii) as they feed on infected plants. The virus spreads rapidly in the field through aphid vectors and infected plant material. There is no curative treatment once plants are infected.
