Tomato mosaic virus (ToMV) is a plant pathogenic virus classified as a positive-sense single-stranded RNA (ssRNA) virus within the Tobamovirus genus. Widely distributed globally, ToMV predominantly affects tomatoes but also impacts various plants, including Solanaceous species like pepper and petunia. The virus induces distinct symptoms on infected tomato plants, such as mottled foliage, fern-like leaves with pointed tips, and distorted fruit with yellow blotches and necrotic spots. In younger plants, ToMV reduces fruit set, causing distortions and blemishes. Environmental factors, including temperature, day length, and light intensity, influence symptom severity.
