Ditylenchus dipsaci (DITYDI) is a destructive stem nematode affecting over 500 plant species, including onions, garlic, alfalfa, and ornamentals. These microscopic worms invade plant tissues, causing swelling, distortion, and stunted growth. Infected bulbs often show dark rings when cut open, while stems become twisted and brittle.

The nematode spreads through infected planting material, contaminated soil, and water. It survives for years in dry plant debris as dormant juveniles. Cool, moist conditions (15-20°C) favor its activity. The pest is particularly damaging in allium crops and temperate regions.

Management requires certified clean seeds, hot water treatment of bulbs (3 hours at 44°C), and 4-5 year crop rotations with non-host cereals. Soil fumigation may be needed in severe cases. Infected plants must be removed and destroyed, as heavy infestations can cause 60-80% yield losses.
