Xylophilus ampelinus(XANTAM) is a gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium with a single circular chromosome, known for causing bacterial blight in grapevines (Vitis vinifera). It enters through wounds, pruning cuts, or stomata, and spreads via rain splash, contaminated tools, or infected planting material. Symptoms include necrotic streaks on shoots, wilting, leaf necrosis, and cane dieback. The pathogen overwinters in canes and buds. There is no curative treatment; control focuses on using certified disease-free vines, pruning during dry periods, disinfection of tools, and early molecular diagnosis to prevent spread in vineyards.
